Students Project Europe (SPE)

Practical Job Experience for young People from Middle and Eastern Europe

A Service Project by the Rotary Clubs of District 1860

Since 2000, many clubs in our district have offered hospitality to young people from Eastern Europe. Their three weeks' stay has built bridges to our eastern neighbours and was an important contribution to foster friendship and understanding.

In the past, mainly students participated in this program. From 2002 / 2003 on, we'll prefer to invite young people (age 20 - 26) who are already on a job, but also students who are finishing their education. Coming both from crafts and from academic educations, they will stay as auditors for four weeks to gain experience in their profession. Due to legal reasons, they won't get a salary for this time.

During their stay, the young people will be guests of a Rotary Club in District 1860. Hosting clubs will take care for an audit opportunity, accommodation and feeding. A club's vocational service officer should be the best manager for these tasks.

Hosts will pick up their guests at the arrival point in Germany. Health, accident and liability insurances are organized by District 1860. Traveling costs have to be paid by the participants, only exceptions may be sponsored by the district.

Applicants need to know the German language to be able to communicate with their hosting partners. Hosts are asked to provide supporting programs, invitations to Rotary events and to private events as well, so that the guests can experience life in Germany, too.

The SPE program is offered by Rotary Districts and Clubs locally in: Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Polan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Ukraine. Maximum four applicants per country will be invited. The number of participants will total between 30 and 40.

SPE created a lot of enthusiasm and long-lasting effects. Anyone who participated knows that this investment carries a good return.
