Discontinuation of RI-CAS and RI-DAS
PC club administration no longer supported by R.I.
From July 1, 2008 on R.I. will no longer support PC club administration software RI-CAS and RI-DAS, Secretary General Ed Futa wrote to the Governors in April 2008.
Only a very low percentage of the clubs used this software. Thus it got too expensive to continue support and development.
RI will spent the ressources for other key projects of the organization.
Note: the PC software is quite different from online functions ("member access"), which will continue.

Membership Roster Schedule
It's quite different this year: 5 districts were expected to work with RO.CAS, but nearly all districts want to do it.
However, many clubs are not yet familiar with the software and need support. Additionally, the technical transfer is slower than expected.
As a result, the membership roster is behind schedule. Data of District 1860 will be handled not earlier than end of April at our publisher.

Schedule for Members Register
Jürgen Hopf, Director of Rotary-Verlag (Rotary publishing house), announced the schedule for the new members register on Jan 26, 2008 in Frankfurt.
On Jan 30, data are imported from club administration system RO.CAS. From Feb 15 on, the clubs receive PDF documents with generated data. After final corrections, print preprocessing starts on Apr. 30 - to have the register ready before the Rotarian year 2008-09 begins.

"Make Dreams Real"
Theme 2008-09 unveiled
Rotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee addressed incoming district governors at the 2008 International Assembly, urging them to use their resources to help curb child mortality. Lee said he was in disbelief when he learned that 30,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, measles, and malaria.
"In 2008-09, I will ask you all to Make Dreams Real for the world's children," he said. "This will be our theme, and my challenge to all of you." [More ...]

"Rotary Shares" in 2007-08
Theme announced in San Diego
The 2007-08 theme Rotary Shares will act as a daily reminder of what ordinary people can accomplish through the extraordinary work of Rotary, said RI President-elect Wilfrid J. Wilkinson at the 2007 International Assembly's opening session.
"What makes Rotary great is our expressing the love in our hearts through the work of our hands and our minds," said Wilkinson. "As Rotarians, we don't just sit back and talk about loving other human beings. As Rotarians, we demonstrate that love, and we share that love, through helping each other."
Almost everything Rotary does involves sharing, Wilkinson told more than 500 district governors-elect gathered at the meeting in San Diego. "We share our time, we share our talents, and we share our money with others who need our help." [More ...]

Change at RFPD
Ekkehart Pandel succeeds Robert Zinser
For 10 years, Robert Zinser headed the German Section of the Rotarian Action Group for Population and Development. Now he resigned because of his age.
The annual general meeting elected PDG Ekkehard Pandel as Zinser's successor.
Pandel (RC Bückeburg, D. 1800) was chairman of the German governors' council in 2004/05.
Robert Zinser does not retire - he stays with RFPD as chairman of the advisory board.

Charity Navigator, a leading evaluator of public charities, has awarded The Rotary Foundation its top rating of four stars.
Established to help individuals make intelligent giving choices, the nonprofit Charity Navigator provides free ratings of tax-exempt charities based in the United States that receive substantial public support (more than $500,000). Charity Navigator also considers length of operation and program type before including an organization on its master list for evaluation.
Currently, Charity Navigator evaluates the organizational efficiency, organizational capacity, and overall financial health of more than 5,000 charities. [More ...]

With his August letter DG Klaus-Dieter Heinrich launched the campaign "Nutrition Awareness for Healthier Children" (www.gesundekids.de).

Memorable Centennial Concertr in Speyer
Paul-Harris-Fellow for Head of State Kurt Beck
Ten clubs from Palatinate celebrated Rotary's Centennial in Speyer.
On Saturday, May 21, a concert in protestant Trinity Church presented opuses by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Sebastian and Johann Christian Bach. Elke Völker (RC Limburgerhof-Vorderpfalz) conducted an orchestra and a choir out of Rotarians, who had gathered together especially for this event.
Governor Dr. Horst Schöttler took the opportunity to award Kurt Beck, Prime Minister of the state Rhineland-Palatinate, as a Paul-Harris-Fellow. Thus the district honoured Beck's personal and political contribution in Rwanda and in Sri Lanka as welll as his support for volunteers in his state.

"Service above Self" is Theme 2005-06
Rotary International President-elect Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar made a grand bow to continuity and the successes of the past century when he unveiled the 2005-06 theme, Service Above Self, at the International Assembly in Anaheim, California, USA, on 19 February.
"I have chosen the best motto ever created for Rotary International, yet one that you will not find on the walls of this room: Service Above Self," Stenhammar declared in the theme address at the opening plenary session.
The RI president-elect explained that his theme selection was also guided by Rotarians’ need for landmarks while entering into a second century of service.

Global Public Image Campaign

Clubs and districts across the world are participating in a global effort to promote more awareness about Rotary’s ideals and humanitarian programs.
The new publicity initiative, officially called the "Humanity in Motion" Global Public Image Campaign, ties in well with grassroots outreach efforts by Rotary clubs.
Rotarians can use a media kit that features a CD-ROM specially produced for the campaign to obtain gratis or low-cost placements with their local media. The CD-ROM contains television and radio public service announcements as well as print, Web, and outdoor ad designs with a polio eradication theme.

To mark the jubilee "100 Years of Rotary International", the German foundation DER ROTARIER announces a program of "International Scholarships for Students from Middle and Eastern Europe" in Germany.
The program is endowed with 100.000 EUR and addressed to students from Middle and Eastern Europe, who want to study in Germany.

10,000 Visitor at the Information Fair
Some 10,000 visitors within two days - Ralf-Michael Zapp and his colleages from the Rotary Clubs of the Saarland were very pleased. They managed to organize a real big information fair: "High-School Diploma - and then ?!"

International Rotary Centennial Park
100 Trees for Peace
On occasion of the centennial of Rotary International, a Rotary Centennial Park will be created in the middle of Germany, under the motto "100 Trees for Peace", a project of international scope and with international participation, a project which deals with the essential basic ideas of Rotary, but, above all, wants to establish a symbol of peace.
The project of D.1950 is embedded in the Federal Garden Show 2007. The location is in the heart of Europe, where once a harsh border separated East and West.

Board Member becomes Under-Secretary of State
Dr. Christian Ege (34), RC St. Ingbert,
has been appointed as an Under-Secretary of State in Saarland by Prime Minister Peter Müller (CDU). Ege works in the Ministry of economy, labour and innovation. Christian Ege covers the issue "New Members" and coaches the scholarship holders in D.1860.

William Boyd from Auckland nominated as RI President 2006/2007
Breaking News from the Ticker: Rotary International has nominated ist next president and comes from RC Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand.
He will become the president-nominee on 1 December if there are no challenging candidates.

A former member and past president of the Rotary Club of Wellington South, New Zealand, Boyd has served RI as district governor, director, treasurer, member and chair of regional and international committees, group discussion leader and moderator at the International Assembly, and RI presidential representative to local and international conferences. Club Administration Software published in German
In May 2004, Rotary International has published a German version of it's club administration software (CAS). This is the first Non-English version which R.I. has launched worldwide. CAS is based on the Clubmate software, which has been purchased by R.I. in 2003. [More ...]

Liability Insurance
From July 1, 2004 on, liabilities from Rotary events are covered by an insurance. According to a D.1860 board decision, a contract was negotiated to prevent personal claims for Rotarians.

President-elect Estess declares in new theme at International Assembly
RI President-elect Glenn Estess Sr. unveiled the 2004-05 theme "Celebrate Rotary" at the International Assembly in Anaheim, California, USA, on 16 February. He explained to 529 incoming district governors gathered at this important training meeting that the new theme was inspired by the desire to celebrate in the Centennial year the ideals that Rotary's founders stood for and that over the years have influenced generations of Rotarians to do good throughout the world. PDG Hellge nominated as Director R.I.
On 25.09.2003, the Nominating Committee of R.I. Zone 14 has nominated PDG Dr. Horst Heiner Hellge as Director R.I. for the 2005-2007 period.
Since 1979, PDG Hellge has been member of RC Hamburg - Blankenese. In 1999-2000, he was Governor of D.1890.

More than 1,500 Rotarians flocked to the Nigerian capital, Abuja, from all parts of the country and beyond to attend the RI Presidential Celebration at the Abuja Nicon Hilton Hotel on 9 August 2003. Golf Competition of D.1860
The District Golf Competition has been a success. 74 participants from 12 clubs started. Prizes of more than 3000 € had been sponsored by different companies. Thus a net benefit of 5500 € resulted for PolioPlus.

PDG Robert Zinser has been elected World chairman of the Rotarian Initiative For Population and Development at the annual meeting during R.I.'s Brisbane Conference.

Rotary world mourns death of Ade Majiyagbe
Ade Majiyagbe, wife of RI President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe, died on 6 June 2003 in England, having suffered a stroke a few weeks earlier. Known and loved throughout the Rotary world for her warmth, good humor, and dedication to Rotary, Ade was very active in Inner Wheel in her homeland of Nigeria and served on the organization's international board of directors. Afghanistan to be Rotary country no. 166
Afghanistan, recently suffering from international and regional conflicts, has moved a great step ahead towards peace and understanding.
Rotary Club of Khabul being re-chartered, is a significant landmark of this way. Initially founded in 1968, the club broke up in 1979, suffering from war and political instability.
Returning to Kabul, Rotary covers 166 countries now. Especially in the Arab world, Rotary makes remarkable progress.

Lend a Hand
President-elect unveils 2003-04 theme at International Assembly
RI President-elect Jonathan Majiyagbe on January 27, 2003 unveiled the 2003-04 theme, Lend a Hand, at the International Assembly in Anaheim. Majiyagbe called his theme "simple and straightforward, expressing the natural impulse that all Rotarians feel when they come face to face with human need."
Outlining his four areas of focus for the year-poverty, health, literacy, and the family of Rotary-the president-elect said, "We will Lend a Hand to alleviate poverty, educate the illiterate, and relieve the scourge of disease, and [we will] Lend a Hand of fellowship to all of the family of Rotary," he said.
Citing the outstanding relief efforts of Rotarians to natural disasters, Majiyagbe said, "Hunger, poverty, disease, poor health - these are the disasters that have befallen millions and we must reach out and pull them to safety with the same sense of urgency that we would pull someone from out of raging floodwaters." The Council of Legislation (CoL) will take place from June, 14th to June, 18th in Hotel Marriott Downtown Chicago. The Council on Legislation, Rotary's "parliament," meets every three years to deliberate and act upon all proposed enactments and resolutions.
All enactments and proposals must be suggested until June 30, 2003.
