1,600 German Rotarians celebrated the Centennial on March 19, 2005 in Berlin.
Guest speaker was Dr. Klaus Töpfer, UNEP Executive Director, who spoke about the global challenges for service organizations like Rotary.
"To show responsability and to service above self are Rotary's tasks", Töpfer said.
1.2 Million members build a global network of individuals who respond to these challenges. "We are living in a world without borders, depending on the responsibility of others", Töpfer explained.
"PolioPlus" has shown that Rotary accepts its mission. Dr.Carlo Ravizza, Chairman of the Rotary Foundation summarizes this effort in saying "More than five millions of children can run today,
resulting from Rotary's vaccination campaigns."
Since mid 80s, German Rotarians raised 11.3 million Euros, and more than 600 million US $ have been raised by Rotarians worldwide.
Not celebrating the past, but offering a great future for this world would be Rotary's challenge for the next 100 years, Ravizza said. AIDS, hunger and illiteracy will be key issues for the future.
